Community Atlas

Welcome to Carrollton, Illinois

Located in the west/southwest section of Illinois, Greene county is immediately north of the St. Louis metropolitan area and is bordered on the west by the Illinois River. Originally home to the Kickapoos and Pottawatamies, the county was organized in 1821. It included the area now including both Greene and Jersey counties. The counties of Scott, Morgan and Macoupin were temporarily attached to Greene County.

Currently, Greene County is a largely rural area with most of its population density in and around the communities of Carrollton, White Hall, Greenfield, and Roodhouse. Carrollton began in 1821, White Hall began in 1832, Greenfield began in 1843, and Roodhouse began in 1866. In addition to these towns, small villages with local trading centers and post offices sprang up throughout the county.

The town of Carrollton has around 2,800 people. In this primarily rural community, many residents commute to work in nearby cities including Jacksonville which is 35 miles to the north, Jerseyville which is 15 miles to the south, Alton which is 35 miles to the south, and St. Louis which is 65 miles to the south.

Our Community Atlas project focuses on the growth of our county including schools, buildings of note, and historical residents.
