Carlin- Past and Present

Thomas Carlin was born in 1789 near the current capital of Kentucky, Frankfort. In 1803 he then moved to Spanish territory which in now known as Missouri. When his father died he then moved to Illinois where he presided until his death. He served as a Ranger in the War of 1812. In 1818 he found land, which now is part of Carrollton.

Important Dates of Carlin's Life

April 1821- elected Sheriff
1824- elected as a state senator
December 7, 1838- elected as the 6th Governor of Illinois where he served for 4 years
February 14, 1917 died in his Carrollton home

On July 4, 1917 a monument of dedication was given in Thomas Carlin's name where a statute of him was placed on the Southeast corner of the Carrollton Courthouse lawn where it still stands today.
